What makes a great inn? These days, it can seem that all it takes is someone to slap the word "inn" on a brand-new building. But in West Virginia, you'll find the real thing.

Back when a paved highway meant a log turnpike and a "short-cut" went over the mountain, not around it, inns sprang up across West Virginia to ease the weary traveler with a fine meal and a comfortable bed. From the National Road in the north to the Midland Trail in the south, early thoroughfares across West Virginia were dotted with inns that provided comfort and personal attention after a long day on the road.

That same tradition continues today, in many cases in the original buildings constructed for the purpose. But whether the bricks and mortar are new or old, it's the personal service provided by West Virginia innkeepers that makes the state's inns a special experience for today's traveler. Take a step back in time to when a check-in didn't mean a credit check, and when a checkout didn't mean a printout. Think of a hearty first-name greeting, a fine meal and a fond "farewell" at the end of your stay. Now you've got the picture.
